Beautiful Calella de Palafrugell

Catalonia rocks! It really has it all. It does not stop amazing me. Wherever I go, I find places not only beautiful but with this kind of magic and atmosphere that you read about in books or see in romantic movies.

Calella de Palafrugell is one of them. It’s on Costa Brava, but as I call it on better part of Costa Brava. Anything that is further north from Barcelona than Lloret de Mar is great. It’s about one and a half hour drive north from Barcelona. I went there twice, and definitely going there in August is not the best idea. There was no place to put the towel on the beach, and I would say the magic is a bit lost in the tourist crowd.

To run away from summer crowds you just need to turn in to one of the narrow streets with postcard purple flowers and white houses.

As opposite,  in January the village was just half asleep, calm and totally enchanting. The beach is all yours.
The colourful boats on the beach are as if they were waiting to be photographed. There are more cats lazily resting in the sun then people.

The local girl asked what else should we visit around Calella, she suggested going to Begur.
On the way we stopped to admire the views while the sun was slowly hiding behind the hills.

Begur is a coastline town that is also very touristic (could be packed with 40 000 people where there are only 4000 of inhabitants), with magnificent views and mysterious medieval towers on the hill. We climbed on top and it was worth it.

No matter how I would describe the afternoon I spent on the empty beach of Calella de Palafrugell, it would sound corny.
Colourful fish boats, empty beach, cats sleeping in the sun, cosy restaurant with great seafood, waves crashing on the rocks, sunset.
The thing is that it really is like that and to experience it is just a pure pleasure.
