La Molina – great ski destination in Catalonia

It is commonly known that Costa Brava has super beaches. What about those travelers that like winter activities. Well, as it was said before – Catalonia has it all. It takes only 2 hours drive from Barcelona to get to the very nice ski resort, La Molina – 2000 meters above the sea level.

Beach or ski – you choose

Ski resort La Molina is situated 160 km from the city. The roads are great, comfortable and road signs are easy to follow. Watch out, sometimes it costs a lot. So if you want to travel north, check out the alternative routes if you want to avoid tolls. Usually the secondary roads are very good and we use them a lot.

So when coming to Barcelona, don’t you forget winter jacket! You may need it, if you are bored with the beach :)

Ski Slopes in La Molina

I am not an experienced ski traveler. I learned skiing in Poland where it takes 2 minutes to go down the slope and 20 min (or more) of queuing to the lift. That’s the ski reality that I am used to. So when I first time came to Pirineos I could not believe it: I have so many slopes to choose, I have a parking place, I don’t need to queue for the lift, and the slopes are soooooo long, my god – that’s heaven for me. For the moment I really don’t need much more.

It is enough for me that it is so close to Barcelona, the sun is always shining there and everything is organized the way I can really enjoy the ride.

From the beginner’s slope to the top of the mountain

My son Max (6 years old), after few one day trips to the mountain and ski lessons with his daddy, he is almost professional now… Thanks to that, we could see most of the slopes (including the black ones) and admire the views from the top of the mountain.

On the top of the mountain

We were skiing from 12 to 5 PM with 40 min break for quick lunch. They were closing the station at 5 PM, which surprised us a bit as it seemed a bit early. But the truth is that after 4 hours of intensive ride, we were totally wrecked and even if somebody paid us to stay more and ski, we wouldn’t. Therefore we left tired and happy few minutes after 5 arriving to Barcelona after 7 PM. Just in time to take a bath, change clothes and go out for dinner.

The weather in Pirineos

We have not changed the tires to go to the mountains. We didn’t have the chains either. There was 12 degrees up to the La Molina village. Only around the slope it dropped down a little. The sun was shining and it was really warm. At some point we decided to use only the lifts that were closer to the top and not to go down because it was too hot (!)

That was perfect combination for me because I really hate when it’s cold, but I looove skiing. So La Molina was just great – 100% of undisturbed, pure pleasure.

The last time we were going up with the lift, we could see the weather was changing. The sun was hiding behind the dark clouds and the wind was stronger and colder. Time to go home!
